What is emotional intimacy?

Emotional intimacy is the feeling of being known and accepted by your partner, beyond your plans and preferences. It covers your inner world: what you're afraid of, what you hope for, what hurt you as a kid, what made you happy today.

It's different from physical intimacy, though the two are closely linked. For many people, especially in long relationships, feeling emotionally close is what makes physical closeness feel natural. When emotional intimacy fades, couples often describe feeling like roommates, even if nothing is technically wrong.

How emotional intimacy is built

Psychologists who study intimacy describe a simple loop: one person shares something personal, and the other responds in a way that makes them feel understood and cared for. Each time that loop goes well, closeness grows. When it goes badly (a dismissive comment, a joke at the wrong moment, a phone check), people share less next time.

That's why the questions below matter less than how you respond to the answers. Listen fully, reflect what you heard, and don't rush to fix or judge.

Psychologist Arthur Aron showed how strong this loop can be. In his well-known study, pairs of strangers who took turns answering gradually more personal questions felt surprisingly close within 45 minutes. Couples can use the same principle, a little every day.

5 emotional intimacy exercises for couples

1. Daily high and low

Each evening, share the best and hardest moment of your day. Two minutes each, no fixing. Over time you get used to letting each other in.

2. Stress-reducing conversation

Spend 15 minutes talking about stress from outside the relationship (work, family, friends). The listener's only job is to take their partner's side and show understanding. No advice unless asked.

3. Appreciation swap

Once a week, each name three specific things you appreciated about the other. Be concrete: instead of “you're great”, say “I loved how you handled the kids' bedtime on Tuesday.”

4. Eye contact minute

Sit facing each other and hold eye contact for one minute without talking. It feels awkward at first, and that awkwardness often turns into laughter, then into closeness.

5. Weekly check-in

A short, regular conversation about how you're doing as a couple. Here's a simple format: relationship check-in questions.

How to ask, so it never feels like a test

  • Choose calm moments. Avoid the middle of a disagreement or times when someone's exhausted.
  • One or two questions, not a list. Going deeper on one helps more than covering many.
  • Go first sometimes. Sharing your own answer makes it safer for them.
  • Respond with warmth. “Thank you for telling me that” is often the best reply.
  • Let them pass. “I'm not ready to answer that” is a fine answer.
  • Come back to it. Asking later, “I was thinking about what you said about your dad…”, shows you were really listening.

If conversations about feelings tend to turn tense, start with how to talk to your partner without fighting.

Questions people ask

What is emotional intimacy in a relationship?

Emotional intimacy is the sense of being deeply known and accepted by your partner. It shows up as being able to share worries, hopes and feelings without fear of judgment, and feeling that your partner understands what's going on inside you.

What are examples of emotional intimacy?

Telling your partner about a fear you've never said out loud, them remembering and asking about it later, crying in front of each other, sharing small daily joys and frustrations, and feeling comfortable being quiet together.

How do you build emotional intimacy in a relationship?

Share a little more than you usually would, respond warmly when your partner does, ask curious questions about their inner world, and make it a regular habit. Emotional intimacy grows from many small moments of sharing and warm responses more than from one deep conversation.

What if my partner doesn't like deep questions?

Start lighter and more concrete (“What was the best part of your day?”), ask side by side rather than face to face, and answer first yourself. Some partners warm up over weeks. Our guide on helping a partner open up has more ideas.
